As an authors of Open Design Now declare, there is a revolution going on in design.
The proliferation of virtual and analogue networks has created a new commons for design practitioners and communities. The gigantism of the Internet is being harnessed by groups and individuals to model and share collaborations, on a variety of scales, dealing with multifarious issues ranging from food consumption and production, to craftivism, to systems of work. At the heart of the book is the idea and practice of co-creation, which is changing how people work, affecting whether they choose to consume or create or both.
Open Design Now is a collaborative effort of Creative Commons Netherlands, Premsela, the Netherlands Institute for Design and Fashion and Waag Society. Contributors to the project include, among others: Paul Atkinson, Michael Avital, Bruce Mau, Renny Ramakers, Carolien Hummels, John Thackera. Chapters can be downloaded for free from opendesignnow.org.
