MA Design Studies alumna Mae Wiskin writes to us from her new venture, The Every Day Project, which started a #45to45 social media campaign to make 45 acts of change before Inauguration Day.
Earlier this year I completed my masters in Design Studies from Parsons The New School of Design. Once I left school, I quickly found a position working in digital media. I was content in my new role until the shock of the presidential election hit, and like everyone else, I found myself questioning everything. Chief among them was what do we do now? Coming from a university that challenges its students to fight against the belief that the way the world works is the way the world must be, I found myself wondering how we ought to redesign our systems in order to move forward.
In collaboration with many others creatives across media and design, I began working on an initiative, called The Every Day Project. Activism can feel overwhelming, and in an environment where so many different communities are under attack, it becomes difficult to know where to target your energies and attention. Due to this, we are starting simple: one action, taken together, every day, now until Inauguration Day.
We live in a world where we have no choice but to make political action a necessary part of our daily lives and because the biggest changes start simple, we want to take it one day at a time.
If you join us, WE promise to send you one action daily that you can take to fight alongside the people across every group affected by this election. Every action will work to protect the issues and communities most at threat, including: women, people of color, LGBTQ people, voting rights, climate change, healthcare, and immigration.
By joining us, YOU promise to sign up for these daily updates with a friend and to encourage each other to keep the momentum going, to never settle for complacency, and to be an active member of a movement mobilized to stand up for everyone’s rights by Inauguration Day, January 20, 2017.
