Since her twenties, Sharyn Finnegan has been creating an autobiography through self-portraits.  These portraits form the centerpiece in the retrospective of her work, which opens on Tuesday at the Blue Mountain Gallery in Chelsea.  Recent paintings and drawings will also be shown.

Created on the coasts of England, Iceland, Newfoundland, Denmark and around her New York and Vermont homes, Finnegan’s images have a strong focus on the observation of the subject, whether figure or landscape.

Her self-portraits are her single most repeated subject over the course of a career that has addressed many subjects and Finnegan views them as her ongoing autobiography, with the imagery at times vigorously emotional and personal.

With a strong dedication to technique, and belief that variability and complexity are closer to our real lives, Finnegan’s works vary in size — her work can leap from 4”x6” to 30”x40” or from a horizontal positioning to a vertical one.  She especially likes the challenge of encompassing large scale subjects on small canvases.
