This symposium marks the launch of the new MA Fashion Studies program in the School of Art and Design History and Theory at Parsons. Placing an emphasis on ethnographies of fashion and the engagement with fashion as material culture, Locating Fashion / Studies presents interdisciplinary scholars who will reflect on research practices within diverse fields of fashion, ranging from: collecting and exhibiting in the museum and the multiple sites of the transnational fashion industry, to global denim, the fashioning of masculinities, and image production in New York modeling agencies. Together, they pose the overarching question – how is fashion and its study constituted in and across such different sites? Focusing on research pathways as well as outcomes, the presenters at this symposium will provide insight into their approaches and experiences within these varied fields and discuss their methodological and theoretical implications for the cultural analysis of fashion and the advancement of fashion studies.
