Mediatory Spaces

Now in its initial phases of development, Mediatory Spaces will be a media-rich, internet-based humanities research laboratory hosted by the School of Art and Design History and Theory at Parsons The New School for Design.

The scholarship that drives Mediatory Spaces opens up a previously under-considered space of inquiry through its theorization of the multifarious configurations of space and media in the global economy. Building on the seminal work of Beatriz Colomina from architectural history and Anna McCarthy from television studies, the research laboratory builds on the disparate strands of academic literature on architecture, urbanism, television, film, art history, public policy and new media on the relationship between space and media. Exemplary topics include the presence of expanded television in urban environments, the dissemination of architectural spaces in screens of various sizes that nurture new modes of habitation and public engagement, and earlier work by artists such as Kit Galloway’s and Sherrie Rabinowitz’s Hole-in-Space: A Public Communications Sculpture (1980).

The research laboratory aims to bring together a group of core scholars from diverse disciplines and to support their work through collaborative mentorship and process-oriented peer review.
