Janet Kraynak is a recipient of The College Art Association 2011 Art Journal Award for Distinction. Her article, entitled, “‘The Land’ and the Economics of Sustainability”, examines ‘The Land‘ ( a project-based site comprised of commissioned structures, a rice field, and an artist-in-residency program in Sanpatong, Thailand, founded by artists Rirkrit Tiravanija and Kamin Lertchaiprasert) in relation to the rhetoric of sustainability. Specifically, the article discusses the emergence of sustainability as an economic doctrine and how this coupling potentially challenges The Land’s self-presentation as a set of socially-based practices that operates outside of — and in opposition to — global economics.
