In November 2009 Greg Newton gave a talk “Flirting with the Decorative, Risking Infection: Abstract Painting and the Easel Picture’s ‘Crisis’ in 1950s New York.” This talk was the first in the series of brown bags sponsored by the School of Art and Design History and Theory. Greg’s talk will contribute to the following chapter of his dissertation: “The Emergence of Monochrome Painting in 1950s New York.” As part of his research Greg interviewed the painters Ellsworth Kelly, Brice Marden, and David Novros in the past year.
