Conversation with Lorraine Wild:
Expanding the Purview of Communication Design

On Thursday, Oct. 25th, designer Lorraine Wild will join MA Design Studies program director Susan Yelavich in an informal discussion about the various modes of practice she sustains: writing, teaching, designing, publishing and (most recently) rethinking communication strategies in the context of a museum.
Wild, an AIGA gold medalist, is one of the premier book designers in the US. She is well known for her book designs for architects (i.e., Mies van der Rohe, Morphosis, John Hejduk) and for her catalogs for museums ranging from the Whitney to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where she is now holds the new post of Creative Director of Design.
Her work at LACMA is a prime example of how design practice is expanding and changing today. Wild continues to design and publish books and other graphic materials through her studio Green Dragon Office (www.greendragonoffice.com). But, at the same time, she is also rethinking and redesigning the ways in which a museum communicates as an institution. She is currently in the process of reviewing every aspect of its programs and operations from visitor services, to curatorial essays and labels, to communications between and among staff.
