Dr. Eleni Tzirtzilaki gave a talk titled “Together with the Communities in Athens” on June 21st at Parsons.
Eleni Tzirtzilaki is a collaborator on the “Routes and Homes” project sponsored by The New School¹s Design and Social Sciences Research Grant, initiated by Lydia Matthews, Gabrielle Bendiner-Viani and Jilly Traganou, which will culminate in a tree planting/story harvest in El Jardin del Paraiso, a community garden in the East Village.
Eleni Tzirtzilaki (Ph.D., National Techincal University of Athens) is a practicing architect, researcher, and activist and teaches design at AKTO (Athens Arts and Technology Group). She has also taught at the School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens. Her work focuses on transnational cities, urban nomadism and habitation of displaced groups. She is a cofounder of Urban Void (http://urbanvoidathens.wordpress.com), a multidisciplinary research group which stages urban actions in Athens, and of Nomadic Architecture Network, an open workshop that searches for modes of interaction in urban areas in crisis. Dr. Tzirtzilaki¹s work has been featured at the ninth Vienna Architecture Biennale, twenty-sixth Sao Paulo Biennale, and in (Un)common Place: Art, Public Space and Urban Aesthetics in Europe (B. Pietromarchi, ed., Actar, Barcelona and Fondazione Andriano Olivetti, 2005). She maintains an architecture practice in Athens, and is member of the architecture team that won first prize in the competition for the remodeling of the Monastiraki Square in Athens (completed in 2008).
