In typical fashion, numerous retailers continued to follow the city’s elite even further uptown in the early 20th century, settling in the prestigious residential areas south of Central Park. Led by Henri Bendel in 1912, other stores followed and came to their final resting locations. Over the course of the century, upper Fifth Avenue dictated fashion for New York City. While some of these stores, such as Bonwit Teller, finally closed their doors in the 1980s and 90s during a wave of mergers and acquisitions, others, such as Bergdorf Goodman, weathered the storm and remain in operation today. Today, upper Fifth Avenue continues to be the elite shopping district of New York.
