Parsons the New School for Design invites you to attend Department Stores and New York Fashion, on Friday, February 14, 2014 from 10am to 5pm. The event celebrates the culmination of the first year of an ongoing three-year project sponsored by the Geraldine Stutz Trust and led by Prof. Hazel Clark, Research Chair of Fashion and Professor of Design Studies and Fashion Studies at Parsons. The Stutz Research Fellows for the first year of the project are Maureen Brewster (MA in Fashion Studies) and Junyao Peng (MA in History of Decorative Arts and Design).

Through a series of presentations by a diverse array of industry professionals and scholars, this one-day symposium will offer new perspectives on the role of the department store as a retail and cultural landmark in New York City. Featured guest speakers will include:

Prof. William R. Leach, author of Land of Desire: Merchants, Power, and the Rise of a New American Culture

Jan Whitaker, social historian and author of Service and Style: How the American Department Store Fashioned the Middle Class

Alessandra Wood, former Parsons MA Decorative Arts student and author of the forthcoming “Designing the Department Store: Designers, Retail Establishments, and the Changing Public Perception of Design in the Mid-Twentieth Century”

Michael Lisicky, author of a number of books on landmark department stores

Department Stores and New York Fashion will be free and open to the public; more details will be announced soon.
