Winterthur Awards Inaugural Katherine C. Grier Prize to Dr. Bess Williamson, MA History of Decorative Arts and Design Alumna

winterthurportfolioWinterthur Museum, Garden & Library has announced the winner of the first Katherine C. Grier Prize for the best recent article in Winterthur Portfolio: A Journal of American Material Culture. Dr. Bess Williamson received the 2013 prize for “Getting a Grip:  Disability in American Industrial Design of the Late Twentieth Century,” Winterthur Portfolio, Volume 46, Number 4, Winter 2012. Dr. Williamson is assistant professor in the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Winterthur’s Academic Programs Department will award the prize every two years, in the amount of $1,000, for the best article in the most recent six issues of Winterthur Portfolio. The journal’s Editorial Board members, who are scholars from various disciplines interested in material culture studies, select the winner.

Winterthur established the Grier Prize in 2012, in recognition of Professor Katherine C. Grier’s long service to the journal as executive editor. Dr. Grier is a professor in the Department of History and director of the Museum Studies Program at the University of Delaware.

Winterthur Portfolio is an interdisciplinary journal committed to fostering knowledge of the American past through the study of material culture. It is published three times a year for Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library by the University of Chicago Press. The editors of Winterthur Portfolio seek manuscripts that bring strong comparative approaches to the study of American material life.
