Upcoming: Yves Saint Laurent and The Beat of Africa at FIT

The Fashion Institute of Technology will be hosting two upcoming design-oriented events that are open to ADHT students. On Thursday, March 19 at 6PM, renowned fashion photographer Roxanne Lowit will present “Yves Saint Laurent” at the Fred P. Pomerantz Art and Design Center. Lowit, an alumna of FIT who graduated with a degree in textile design, will discuss her recently published photography book entitled “Roxanne Lowit Photographs Yves Saint Laurent,” which features portraits of the legendary designer and snapshots of models and assistants in the hectic backstage environment of his shows, as well as essays from Laurent’s friends and family.

Lowit, who got her start in photography by taking pictures of her own designs during New York Fashion Week, is considered to be the preeminent backstage fashion photographer. A book signing will follow her talk. The event is free, but RSVP is required. To register, visit here.

On Tuesday, March 24 at 6PM, Simone Cipriani will lead the event “Beat of Africa: The Ethical Fashion Initiative” at the Fred P. Pomerantz Art and Design Center. Cipriani, the founder of the Ethical Fashion Initiative, will discuss and reflect on the organization’s support of the fashion industry in countries like Ghana, Mali, and Kenya. The organization, which started in 2009, trains and connects artisans in these countries with international fashion and design leaders in order to create jobs and ultimately empower women living in impoverished areas, as well as to promote the sourcing of environmentally-friendly material. A book signing will follow the presentation. To register for this event, visit here.
