History, Empathy and the Period Body

Robert Kirkbride is director of studio ‘patafisico and an Associate Professor at Parsons The New School for Design. He received a Ph.D. in the History and Theory of Architecture from McGill University, and his MArch and BA in Design of the Environment from the University of Pennsylvania. His design and research projects center on the interplay of habits and habitats, physical and mental infrastructures, and have been published and exhibited internationally. His multimedia book, Architecture and Memory: the Renaissance Studioli of Federico da Montefeltro (Columbia University Press, 2009), received the Gutenberg-e Prize and is available open-access online, and in print. He has been a Visiting Scholar at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, architect-in-residence at the Bogliasco Foundation in Genoa, Italy, and is an editorial board member of the Nexus Network Journal, for whom he guest edited the volume Geometries of Rhetoric (Birkhäuser, 2010). He has been a visiting critic at the University of Edinburgh, guest professor at the University of Montreal, and conducted a series of design charrettes at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.
