This one day academic symposium presented research on influential women in New York fashion retailing, while also considering broader questions of the women, power and the business of fashion.


Caroline Rennolds Milbank: Fashion historian, author, curator and appraisor

Dr. Stephanie Amerian: Professor of U.S. History, Santa Monica College

Dr. Michael Mamp: Assistant Professor of Fashion Merchandising and Design, Central Michigan University

Dr. Hazel Clark & Lauren Sagadore: Professor of Design Studies and Fashion Studies & MA Fashion Studies Graduate, Parsons School of Design

Their work respectively investigates the history of New York Fashion, Dorothy Shaver of Lord & Taylor,¬†Hortense Odlum and Mildred Custin of Bonwit Teller, and Henri Bendel’s Geraldine Stutz.¬†

Former Bendel’s employees Marion Greenberg and Robert Rufino discuss their time as a buyer and visual display director at Henri Bendel in the 1970s and 1980s. In conversation with Professor Hazel Clark.¬†
